Liberty Street Planter Project
Rome, New York

A Community Art Project sponsored by RCSD and Turner Glass Art
03/2007 Community members are invited to get involved!

Because we want this to be a true community project we are enlisting the help of
other community members – that includes you! We are asking you to design a tile
which we will include in the project. You have the option of coming in and creating
your own tile or having the students create a tile using a design you have created!

09/2006  Our first Community Art Project has been approved!

In 2005 we developed and began work on a project  called “unTApPed”. It is a
community art program for at-risk youth. We began this program with the support
of Rome City School District. Working with students who attend the Rome Tutorial
Center we began the first phase of the project – the learning process – where
ceramic/mosaic skills were taught to the students. The second phase of the project
is the design and installation of a community art project.

Our project is the creation of mosaic panels which would be adhered to the current
cement planters (tree wells) which are located along West Liberty St, in Rome NY.
Participating in this phase of the project will be RTC students and other community
members. The work would be done under the supervision and guidance of  Turner
Glass Art. Each of the panels will be constructed of handmade ceramic tiles which
will be made by the participants. The project will take 4-5 months to complete
(offsite) with the installation planned for the Spring of 2007.

In August 2006 I made a formal presentation of this project to the Design
Committee of Rome Main Streets Alliance. I am happy to report that the design
    application was approved.

Now that school has reopened we are getting started with making the handmade
tiles to be used in the project. Mary Constabile, and Tracy Nimey have joined me in
working with the students. We have lots of work ahead of us but so far, so good!
    Look for updates to come!
